Different Types of Resumes

Functional versus Chronological Resumes

There are two distinct resume styles:

  • Functional Resumes
  • Chronological Resumes

A chronological resume is one of the most popular resume styles and lists employment dates (most recent first). A functional resume does not include the employment chronology but lists your major roles and/or abilities. For example, marketing or managing might be major headings in a functional resume. Depending on your work experiences and/or work history, either one may be preferable in your situation. One of our resume writing specialists can assist you in making that determination.

„My previous resume was poorly written and I did not know why I was not getting interviews. After the re-write I had an interview and a job in 10 days. Thank you.“Ken B. | Construction Foreman, Industrial Projects | Saskatoon

  • Resume Phrases to Avoid

Many functional and chronological resumes feature an over-proliferation of words and phrases that distract from your key qualities and/or responsibilities. Over-use of the following can detract from the overall cover letter and/or resume message:

    • Detail Oriented
    • Experienced
    • Excellent
    • Responsible for
    • Team Player
    • Successful

While all of these words and phrases are seemingly positive, they are truly over-used. If everyone is detail oriented, how does your resume compare if your detail oriented like everybody else? The resume writers at Snap Editing will write a resume for you that proves your detail oriented without writing detail oriented in multiple locations throughout your resume. Isn't that excellent?

  • Which resume type do you recommend?

Most of the time a chronological resume is the best option, However, a functional resume may be the most prudent choice if you have changed jobs frequently or if you have a large number of skills that are highly transferable into other careers.
